Guterres highlighted the ongoing conflicts in various regions, notably Gaza, where a ceasefire is imminent, as well as in Lebanon, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Haiti. He emphasized that the United Nations must prioritize efforts to resolve these crises to foster global stability and peace.
Another pressing concern raised by Guterres was the stark inequalities that persist globally and the failure to meet commitments related to sustainable development goals (SDGs). With only five years remaining until the 2030 deadline for these goals, he pointed out that there is still a staggering $4 trillion gap in funding needed to achieve them.
In light of the escalating climate crisis, Guterres called for a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2035 and urged nations to decrease fossil fuel production. He stressed that immediate action is necessary to combat climate change and protect future generations.
Finally, addressing the rapid advancements in technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), Guterres warned of its potential dangers if left unchecked. He called on the international community to ensure that AI developments promote humanity’s progress while upholding principles of equality and dignity.
Through these initiatives and calls for action, Guterres aims to galvanize global cooperation and commitment towards creating a more equitable and sustainable world.
